Mille Miglia 2010 Report

This year, 375 vehicles and participants from 36 countries, including four pairs from Japan, participated in the Mille Miglia that took place from May 6 to 8, 2010.
Of those four vehicles from Japan that all completed the race, Mr. and Mrs. Takemoto’s 1926 Bugatti T35A (entry number 13) came in 14th place overall, the highest rank ever achieved by Japanese participants.
The Cané-Galliani couple, who also has won La Festa Mille Miglia in the past, came in first place and claimed their tenth victory, an unprecedented achievement in the history of Mille Miglia. Luciano Viaro, also a regular of La Festa Mille Miglia, came in second place. Giuliano Cane and Luciano Viaro, whose battle for first place had persisted to the bitter end, were seen congratulating each other once on the podium. It appears that they will continue to dominate Mille Miglia for the time being.

Ferrari Tribute, an event where 130 Ferraris built from 1958 onwards shared the Mille Miglia route, was also introduced this year. Impressive though it was to see a lineup of Daytona, F40, F50, Enzo Ferrari, and other valuable Ferraris, the event did cause some confusion during the race and left some issues to be considered for future events.

Mille Miglia 2010 featured the traditional atmosphere of the event: a lineup of valuable vehicles, beautiful natural and historic landscapes, Brescia and local police on motorcycles controlling traffic, and the Italians’ fun-loving nature demonstrated by the general flurry of the race with vehicles speeding toward the CO goals. From the sidelines were also excitement and wild cheering that reminded one of a soccer match. However, despite the festive atmosphere of the race, there was a sense that the Mille Miglia spirit of fun was gradually changing with the times.

Unfortunately, Mille Miglia was not able to quite achieve the delicate mélange of old traditions and new challenges this year. But as the new organization enters its fourth year next year, we will continue to focus on how it will tackle the difficulties encountered this year.
